Sacred Space + is a performative research project where voice, electronics, and ambisonic spatialization create a contemporary sacred space, a threshold between technology and nature, body and the invisible.
The project stems from an immersive experience in nature and the belief that the sacred is inseparable from physis, the generative principle preceding all forms. It highlights how historical paradigms have marginalized both nature and the feminine, resonating with Marija Gimbutas: “The generative basis of any civilization lies in its artistic creation, aesthetic achievements, nonmaterial values, freedom, and a balance of powers between the sexes.”
Ritual is central: repeated, intentional gestures and wordless vocality transform the ordinary into the extraordinary, generating meaning beyond function. Through four archetypes, shaman, sibyl, mystic, and witch, the project revives the voice of figures historically custodians of intuitive and embodied knowledge. Wearable controllers translate gesture into sound, blending music, movement, and spatialized electronics to dissolve the boundary between natural and digital.
Sacred Space + fuses technological experimentation, ecological ethics, and critical reflection, envisioning the machine as an extension of body, voice, and a civilization founded on balance, relationship, and attentive listening.
Sacred Space + took shape following a meeting with Irene Fortunato at the 2024 edition of Frequencies. Irene Fortunato contributes to the programming of the sound systems for the controllers and accompanies the development of ambisonic spatialization, shaping an immersive and dynamic sonic environment.
Sacred Space unfolds as a sensory and liminal space: a transformative experience where contemporary experimental electronics and archaic ritual memory intertwine, evoking forgotten female genealogies through voice, body, image, and technology.
